Register Of Interests
What is the Register of Interests?
Misson Parish Council is committed to openness, transparency and accountability in local government.
Under the Localism Act 2011, all Parish Councillors are required to register certain financial and personal interests that could potentially influence, or be perceived to influence, their decisions as elected representatives.
The Register of Interests helps ensure that councillors act in the public interest and that any potential conflicts of interest are identified and appropriately managed.
What Information Must Councillors Declare?
Councillors are required to register relevant interests, which may include:
- Employment, business interests and other paid activities.
- Ownership of land or property within the parish.
- Contracts or financial arrangements with the Council.
- Certain financial interests, including company shareholdings.
- Membership of organisations or bodies that may be relevant to their council duties.
- Relevant financial interests of a spouse, civil partner or person with whom they live as a partner.
These declarations are known as Disclosable Pecuniary Interests (DPIs) and Other Registerable Interests, depending on their nature.
How Are Conflicts of Interest Managed?
Councillors have a responsibility to declare relevant interests when matters are discussed at Parish Council meetings.
Where a councillor has a Disclosable Pecuniary Interest in a matter, they must not participate in the discussion or vote unless an appropriate dispensation has been granted.
Other interests may also require a councillor to declare an interest and refrain from participating, depending on the circumstances and the Council's adopted Code of Conduct.
These requirements help ensure that decisions are made fairly, impartially and in the best interests of the community.
Who Maintains the Register?
The Register of Interests for Misson Parish Councillors is maintained by the Monitoring Officer at Bassetlaw District Council.
Councillors must register their interests within 28 days of taking office and notify the Monitoring Officer of relevant changes within 28 days.
